Company Visit: the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

On 7 July 2016, the Rome Business School had the great opportunity to visit the Rome headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO is an intergovernmental organization that came into existence in October 1945, when 42 countries came together in Quebec, Canada. Their goal was to free humanity from hunger and malnutrition, as well as to effectively manage the global food supply.

The FAO is present in over 130 countries and is composed of seven departments: Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Economic and Social Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Forestry, Corporate Services, Technical Cooperation, and, lastly, Programme Management

The students learnt that the FAO is all about food security for everyone; that is to ensure that people have regular access to sufficient quantities of high-quality food so they can lead active, healthy lives.

Its three main goals are:

  1. UNFAO VisitEradicating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition
  2. Eliminating poverty and driving towards of economic and social progress for all
  3. Sustainable manage and utilize natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations

An interesting question and answer session followed the presentation. The students asked many questions in regard to issues pertaining to their countries and to how the FAO proposes to intervene. Last but not least, an amazing tour of the premises; especially of the roof top, with a view that left everyone absolutely astounded.

Our sincere gratitude goes to the FAO for making this day a success; we greatly appreciated their time and hospitality. For more information on the FAO, go to their website at http://www.fao.org/home/en/.
